If you’re looking for a charming, quintessentially New England town with a vibrant and jaunty downtown district and top-rated schools, East Greenwich could be your next best move!
Although East Greenwich has the feel of a coastal South County town, it’s more centrally located within the state than its South County neighbors. East Greenwich is tucked into the western side of Narragansett Bay, and borders Warwick, North Kingstown, West Greenwich, Coventry, and small areas of West Warwick and Exeter. 20 percent of the land in East Greenwich consists of undeveloped woods and farmland, although development continues to bring this number down.
East Greenwich was formally founded as “Greenwich” in 1677 and named for Greenwich, England. In 1686 its name was briefly changed to “Dedford,” but reverted back to “Greenwich” in 1689. The town’s original size proved to be too large for its citizens at the time, who complained that attending town meetings was cumbersome. So in 1741, the more rural western area of the town was split off and established as “West Greenwich,” and the remaining eastern quarter became what we now know as “East Greenwich.”
Today, East Greenwich is home to a number of National Historic Places, many of which are located within the town’s charming downtown historic district, which is home to dozens of independently-owned restaurants and shops and even a vintage theater! Some of my favorite restaurants in downtown East Greenwich include: Besos Bistro, a romantic fine dining spot with seating on its charming outdoor porch; Rasa, which offers incredible Indian fare; Jigger’s American Kitchen, a retro diner serving up casual breakfast and lunch dishes; Frank & John From Italy, which is a great little Italian spot offering pizza and traditional Italian fare in a low-key, family-friendly atmosphere; Water Street Kitchen & Bar, which serves up delicious seafood right on the Marina; Tio Mateo’s Mexican Grille for fun, casual fare; Dante’s Kitchen for Southern comfort food; and for a spot locals love that’s just a short drive from Main Street, Felicia’s is a longtime favorite for coffee and pastries. East Greenwich also has a vibrant nightlife scene, from shows at the Odeum, to outdoor music & cocktails on the Marina at Blu on the Water, and McKinley’s Pub, which is across the street from the yacht club. Away from the main strip, locals also love The Trap, which is a bar & patio at the Safehouse Restaurant that stays open later than most spots in town.
Beyond its fabulous dining, residents love East Greenwich for its tight knit community, hometown events and parades, award-winning schools, and outdoor amenities, like boating and hiking. It’s also a great town for dog lovers, and many restaurants on Main Street offer pet-friendly outdoor seating. One of the town’s most adorable events is its annual dog parade, which coincides with one of the many Main Street Strolls the town offers each year. Residents also love the East Greenwich seasonal farmers’ markets, outdoor movie nights at Academy Field, the annual Summer's End Concert, and Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day parades on Main Street.
East Greenwich offers residents a variety of housing options, including many historic homes and condos in the Hill & Harbor area, and larger suburban homes further west.
East Greenwich truly offers something for everyone. If you’re looking for a town with all of the comforts and outdoor amenities of a suburb, but also want the conveniences and culture of living near a vibrant and walkable downtown, East Greenwich could be your next best move! Let's chat!
